_Rabid_, the latest film by the Soska sisters, is basically a remake of David Cronenberg's _Rabid_, but has clear references to _Shivers, Dead Ringers_, and William S. Burroughs (see also, _Naked Lunch_).
If you have no idea what I am talking about, this is an outbreak movie with some body horror for good measure.
This is a simple enough story: our lead, Rose, is disfigured in a crash, she takes part in an experimental procedure to fix her mangled face - and I'm talking Chuck-Palahniuk level, Invisible Monsters mangled - Rose has a full recovery, and everything appears to be wonderful, until it's not. The movie seems to be making a commentary on the superficiality of beauty - Rose works as a designer for a fashion house - along with a running theme of wanting to be young, and live forever. At least that's what I got.
The effects are pretty good - considering what the budget must have been - and I have to give credit for the use of practical effects.
I'm a huge fan of Cronenberg, so remaking one of his films is essentially blasphemy to me, and it only made me want to rewatch all of his films. That being said, I would hope this might lead a different crowd to his work.
