I hated this slow, cerebral film as a kid. This time, though, it clicked with me a bit more. That's not to say it's a fun or exciting film, it really does drag. But this time I'm watching it coming off the original TV show for the first time, and I just really like spending time with these characters. It's a shame it's all so beige. Certainly, it has one of the best scores of any film, and I really liked the 3 minute opening musical overture.

Always appreciated V'Ger's fashion sense for Ilia - high rise robe and low-rise playboy pumps...I doubt either were Starfleet issued

I’ve finished watching the 2022 Director’s Cut in 4K, and I stand by my adult original opinion from a few years ago: this is an ambitious hard-sci-fi mess that ham-fists its human meaning thrust unevenly throughout its narrative. The Director’s Edition improves the pacing and the 4K is gorgeous to view. There’s plenty of ship-porn!

This movie is hard to rate because the first hour or so is droning and boring with long extended shots of just visuals with no dialogue or anything happening. But the final act is just absolutely incredible and leaves you with a good taste in your mouth. It feels weird to rate a movie that I hated for the majority of it so highly but thats the feeling it leaves me with.

A good idea for a TV episode stretched out to a full length feature film unfortunately leads to some terrible pacing issues. It takes a full hour before the Enterprise even reaches its destination and a further 20 minutes is spent watching the Enterprise fly through what is effectively a light show. Despite this, there are interesting elements, with a very strong core central idea that is followed through and the two new characters of Deckard and Ilia making the most impact oń the story. It is a shame then that there is very little focus on the core characters, with most of the crew, even the major characters, simply reacting to the effects and explaining the plot.

No, I liked the series as a kid but disliked the movies when they came into the video rental shops. I’ve now tried to rewatch this 40 years later in hope of a better viewing experience, but no. It’s terrible, boring and drags on without anything happening. I can’t last the first hour so shutting it off now. Some things u watch as a kid and enjoy, but then dislike when an adult, but this was crap then and now. 1/10.

This movie is quite a departure from the original TV series. Of course, the personalities we've come to enjoy are all here. The visuals are decent and grasp for a "2001: A Space Odyssey" look. I was amazed at how much time the director allows for a tour of the freshly redesigned Enterprise. The way the crew was reassembled was thoughtful.

You're also allowed to marvel at the wonders of the alien spacecraft, but for far too much time. Robert Wise obviously respects the viewer's attention span, but almost to a fault. There's also a nice twist late but it leads to a lackluster conclusion.

This movie is quite a departure from the original TV series. Of course the personalities we've come to enjoy are all here but the visuals are stunning even 2001-ish in their look. I was amazed at how long the director allowed us to tour the freshly redesigned Enterprise along with Kirk and Scotty. Your also allowed to marvel at the wonders of the alien spacecraft. Robert Wise really respects the viewer's capacity for an attention span. The way the crew was reassembled was thoughtful too. There's even a surprising conclusion.

Just out of a cinema screening of the directors cut. I'm absolutely not a trekkie, this is my first viewing, and us Star Wars fans moan about how our franchise has been screwed by Disney well that's nothing compared to the stark difference between original Trek and whatever Discovery is. Loved the sense of wonder, big screen ship porn and fantastic score for this. Obviously in the minority here but loved this! They're screening Wrath of Khan next month, I'll be back for more!

Coming from someone who started to watch Star Trek with TNG only recently, and watching this after finishing TNG and DS9, with being in season 4 of Voyager, this movie was just terrible for me. Nothing ever happened in here, and minutes of nothing happening all the time. This was a torture for me, and I did speed it up very quickly at times.

I was done after 13 minutes. Hard pass.

It is what it is, a start of franchise back in the day. Very slow... no warp speed here.

I absolutely liked the original Star Trek series, even though I haven't complete it yet, but I had not seen this film. So I indulge myself with this first film in honor of Star Trek's 50th anniversary.
It's definitely just like the original series but on a much more bigger scale and budget. You have your familiar characters Kirk and Spock, Sulu. The slow pacing gives it a grand monumental feel that allows the viewer to appreciate the set designs and directing style. It reminded me of something from Ridley Scott and older classic films like _Time Bandits_ (1981) and _Fantastic Voyage_ (1966). Every word that comes out of McCoy's mouth just cracks me up. His character adds comic relief to the dialogue.
After this, I now want to continue where I left off on the series and catch up on the rest of the series.
