_Stillwater_ was good. Long, but a well-made movie.
I remember hearing about this when it came out, and being from Oklahoma, it was a big deal here; so, I thought it was just a story about an Okie working oil rigs. Nope.
The movie really drops you into a story not knowing what is going on, to the point where I thought I missed a scene or the stream skipped a chapter. Nope. That's just how the story is told. One moment we're in Oklahoma, the next we're in France. I was super confused by this, but once the story gets moving, the details are revealed, and it never slows down.
For the most part this is a heavy drama. There is a crime element to it, but not in an action sense - think _Taken_, but then remove Liam Neeson, because we're working within reality here.
Matt Damon is really carrying the movie, and he is phenomenal. Being from Oklahoma, yeah, he nailed it.
This is fully a character-based, emotional drama. Don't expect _Taken_ or _Rambo: Last Blood_.
I can't think of another film to compare this to, however, if you like drama with moments of mystery/crime, this is a good pick.

I have always liked Matt Damon’s work, but I watched this partly die to the presence of Camille Cottin, who was excellent in the French Netflix series Call My Agent!

The main characters are complex, with Damon playing a redneck Oklahoma man and his daughter. Allison, played by Abigail Breslin. They all do fine work and there is a strong ensemble cast behind them. They do a good job mixing the captioned French dialogue with the English speakers.

The plot eventually relies upon a rather large coincidence, but the dialogue and script and crisp, so it all works. Don’t expect a sappy ending here. As in real life, some things work out and some don’t.
