June 1982, Sicily. While Italians dream of winning the World Cup, two adolescents dream of living their love story without fear. Gianni, 17, is bullied because of his homosexuality but his life changes when he meets by accident Nino, 16, a captivating and innocent boy. The profound friendship they develop will without embarrassment turn into love, as they start working together for Nino's father, shooting fireworks. When their bond is discovered by their families, the consequences are as violent as the times and mores are conservative. The two teenagers are separated by force but ready to challenge everything and everyone, convinced their love can defeat death.

The first 2/3rds of this film was giving me Luca and Call Me By Your Name vibes... very cute, sweet, idyllic love story set in Italy. The last third of the film departs from that. I didn't realise going into it that it's heavily inspired by a true story... and reading more about the true story that inspired the film really makes you understand what they were portraying. [spoiler]I normally don't like films that fall into the bury-your-gays trope, but given that this was inspired by a true story that sparked a gay revolution in Italy, I think it's a very important story to tell. It also did a good job of not focusing on the outcome of the story, but rather the love that the two held for each other, and how pure and innocent it was. [/spoiler]
