In 1979 Ohio, several youngsters are making a zombie movie with a Super-8 camera. In the midst of filming, the friends witness a horrifying train derailment and are lucky to escape with their lives. They soon discover that the catastrophe was no accident, as a series of unexplained events and disappearances soon follows. Deputy Jackson Lamb, the father of one of the kids, searches for the terrifying truth behind the crash.

The parallels to Netflix's Stranger Things are amazing. Netflix really chose a good enough movie as the show's influence. It's somehow unrealistic in a lot of ways but it's still a fine movie for a rainy evening.

It was like watch E.T and The Goonies at the same time, but with the knowledge we have nowadays. I really enjoyed it and Michael Giachinno was wonderful as always. J.J Abrams abusing of lens flare, as expected, but it wasn't a bad thing most of the time.

Super 8 pretty much was going for what Stranger Things succeeded at better. There’s a touching story here but Stranger Things is a better love letter to Spielberg. The movie is Romeo and Juliet except with an escaped alien. Joe likes Alice but their parents don’t want them hanging out. Since Alice’s dad got drunk and killed Joe’s mom in a car crash. A little too much of the movie is about that and moving on. That it outshadows the Sci-Fi aspect. As well as the love letter to Spielberg aspect. Seeing the movie again. I do have more respect for it though. I also realize that as a series, Stranger Things has way more time to work with. Super 8 is a sweet movie that is good at pushing out happy tears but that’s mostly it.

Unsuccessful children movie trying to follow the tradition of The Goonies or E.T. from overrated J.J. Abrams.

Tons of money are wasted on FX trying to hide a weak story and a set of terrible dialogues supposedly coming from children that are totally overacted and annoyingly always shouting.

I kind of liked the making-a-movie-within-the-movie aspect of _Super 8_ a lot more than the chief plot with the monster and the train and the badman government and the blah blah blah. Which isn't ideal, but saying that obviously means I liked something about it.
