Early new wave effort from Rohmer, which was the first of his six moral tales. It concerns a young man who approaches a girl in the street, but after several days without seeing her again, he becomes involved with the girl in the local bakery. Eventually, he has to choose between them when he arranges dates with them on the same day.

I remember loving Ma Nuit chez Maud and Le Genou de Claire when I first saw them in the 80s and 90s, so I thought I would introduce a friend to Rohmer by starting at the beginning. Not a good move, I am afraid. Seeing Paris in the 1960s was, as always, a bit of a treat, but the central character was such an unappealing misogynist it was a hard watch even though it was quite short. It appears that Rohmer wanted to retain some ironic distance from his protagonist, but that's hard to maintain when that character is also narrating the film.
