Like "The Big Parade," Vidor deftly handles tonal shifts with aplomb here. What starts out as a romantic comedy (with seriously witty intertitles) with charm oozing from every frame turns into nothing less than the destruction of the American Dream. I really loved Boardman's performance in particular, and it was neat to see the inspiration for certain shots in "The Apartment."
