In regard to its age, it's even better than the 2004 remake. Punisher as typically 80s action movie.

I thought the directing and the soundtrack were the best things about this hard to find movie.

The 2004 film was so much better. Dolph Lundgren looks bored and drunk in this movie and that alone just made it more hilarious to watch. This is one of those "it's so bad that it's kind of funny to watch". Not once did I feel bored while watching the movie, because the whole time I was laughing my ass off at the stupid shit in this movie.

I remember The Punisher as much better than it actually is, but this tends to happen when I take out some of the "lesser known" 80s action flicks I used to love. The Punisher is not a bad movie, but it very much a product of the 80s. Story and acting take a backseat to excessive violence, and few of the things that made the Punisher comics so good got into the screenplay. Typical early comic adaptation in other words. It does work to some extent though, as the Punisher is a rather violent guy in the comics as well. Despite this, I somewhat enjoyed seeing it again. Memories are powerful...

Anyway...if you are after some mindless violence to spruce up your evening. Sure...give The Punisher a chance.

Some over the top cheesy 80s action here but nothing more.

Giving this a **very** generous 4.5 / 10. The terrible overly long intro already lets you guess you're not in for anything good. Some bad film making, murky acting, and underwhelming plot elements – that's it, really. Too often the camera is too close, and too often the colour grading & lighting are not only poorly chosen but even inconsistent from one shot to the next.
The only pluses are the comedy sidekick (who speaks in rhymes half the time) and mostly failed attempts at first person sequences.

All the other Punisher adaptations are vastly better.

The Punisher in name only. There's nothing about the character (name and use of violence aside) that comes from the comic. The 2004 version is so much better.

Dolph Lundgren deals out justice in The Punisher. Based on a Marvel comic, former New York City police detective Frank Castle turns vigilante in order to wipe out the mob families, but he’s forced to help them when the Yakuza kidnaps their children. Lundgren’s performance is alright, but the character of Castle is poorly written. Still, the fight sequences are especially well-done and exciting. The Punisher is entertaining and full of action, but it lacks a compelling protagonist to root for.
