Blade Runner: Black Out 2022 - Comments & Tips
OK, but easily the weakest of the three shorts created to advertise Blade Runner 2049
Probably my least favorite Watanabe production as the story didn't grab me at all, but the visuals/ost were great.
This short is visually stunning. Like, seriously, the animation is god-tier. Easily one of the most beautiful anime shorts I’ve seen. The atmosphere bleeds Blade Runner through and through: gritty, neon-drenched, and haunting in a way that perfectly bridges the original and 2049. Even though it only runs for 15 minutes, it does a shockingly good job of making you care. Trixie and Iggy feel like real people caught up in something bigger than themselves, and their quiet moments hit harder than expected. It doesn’t reach the philosophical heights of the main films, but it doesn’t need to, it’s an emotionally charged, stylish slice of the universe that adds meaningful background and weight to the lore. The music? On point, of course. Classic Blade Runner vibes. And the direction (shoutout to Shinichiro Watanabe) makes the whole thing feel like it belongs in the same breath as the big hitters. Not essential, but absolutely worth your time if you’re even remotely into the world. Short and powerful. Just how it should be.
Definitely my favorite of the 3 promotional short films they made. This one captures the feel of blade runner the best of the 3 and leaves me wishing there was more.
