    Overview

Once a fragile ballerina Olya meets a rude and gloomy boxer Evgeny. The contrast between the worlds of the heroes and their worldview is so striking that the very possibility of intersection of heroes appears as a miracle. Are the heroes ready to accept the same timid feeling that arose between them? Will they overcome everything external and superficial, behind which fragile loving souls are hidden.

My favorite of the Oscar animation shorts. Loved how the world was drawn. Itโ€™s rich and has so much emotion and does it all with only like two line of dialogue. Great editing - knew how to move us through the story so well. Beautifully incorporated use of live action stills and video to ad depth to the animated world. A great couple needle drops in the soundtrack. The ending two lines of text hit so hard, too! Beautifully done! Bravo.

Boxer โ€œEvgenyโ€ is one of those blokes that youโ€™d eagerly cross the street to avoid. He look every inch the pugilist, and is often covered with cuts and bruises. โ€œOlyaโ€, meantime has legs that go all the way up to her armpits, and is the epitome of the elegant and delicate ballerina. They meet and gradually begin to explore each otherโ€™s starkly contrasting worlds. They go to galleries and museums, she to his fights and he even sits through one of her ballets. Despite their differences, they thrive - but can their relationship survive? There is some lovely quirkiness to this sometimes quite brutal and other times quite comical animation, not least when the boxers decide theyโ€™ve had enough of the pesky referee, or when he brings her a half-ton bag of sugar as a gift (but is too shy to personally deliver it) or when she effortlessly reaches for the salt on a shelf about ten feet off the ground. It takes a slight dig at Russiaโ€™s Soviet past and in some way their relationship could be analogous of the old, rotten, bear giving way to the new shoots of reform? This animation has some fine detail to it, is underscored by plenty of Tchaikovsky and I did enjoy it.
