How the fuck was this made in the 80s? 1983?? Bro, this looks better than most of the anime I’ve seen in the last few years, and we’re talking over 40 years later. This is one of the most visually mind-blowing short animations I’ve ever seen. Every frame is alive. It’s like someone just poured pure imagination into a blender and hit max speed, chaotic, detailed, fun as hell.
Even with the kinda grainy video quality floating around online, the actual animation shines through like crazy. This isn’t some basic fan AMV, this is early Gainax (yeah, I just learned that), and you can feel the passion in every shot. It’s absolutely brimming with energy, love for pop culture, and a surreal dreamlike flow that makes it feel bigger than it is.
Set to ELO’s “Twilight,” the whole sequence rides a wave of fast-paced edits, sci-fi laser fights, mecha madness, and what-the-fuck references, Ultraman, Darth Vader, Godzilla, X-Wing fighters, even fucking Hello Kitty. It’s like a love letter to everything nerdy and cool. And it works. It’s overwhelming in the best way possible.
I didn’t know the history before watching, but finding out this was made by a bunch of university students who’d go on to found Gainax (aka Evangelion, FLCL, Gurren Lagann) just makes it hit harder. It’s basically proto-anime insanity. You can feel the birth of something legendary.
Honestly? It made me want to go draw or write something cool. It’s short as hell, but somehow leaves a massive impression. Pure creativity. Definitely something I’ll be thinking about now and again. If you like animation, sci-fi, or just batshit creative energy, watch this. It’s literally like 5 minutes. You’ve got no excuse
