The original title is Hungarian: Könnyű leckék, and this is a Hungarian production that follows Kafia, a Somali teenager who arrived in Hungary two years earlier. The documentary is above all a strong, intimate portrait of her—her attempts to adapt to a new country and the inner struggles she carries with her. She faces language barriers and a strict Hungarian school system that demands more than what we often see in Northern or Western Europe. The film shows how she's pushed to master the language perfectly and adapt culturally, while also wrestling with a heavy internal conflict: converting from Islam to Christianity. That is already a very difficult step, but doing it so openly as Kafia does here is not only bold but incredibly brave, especially considering how parts of the Somali diaspora might see such a decision as an unforgivable betrayal. At the same time, it’s impossible to ignore that the film can also be seen as a strong political statement. It’s a clear portrayal of Kafia as a “successful” assimilation project in Hungary—someone who ultimately masters the language, adopts the country’s values, and even changes religion. There’s an obvious subtext here that effectively supports a stricter view on integration: that high expectations and enforced assimilation create better citizens. It can even be seen partly as a form of Hungarian propaganda—in a positive sense, depending on one’s perspective. The film offers a warm and empathetic view of Kafia as an individual, but at the same time, its message is that Hungary’s model works. It also serves as a kind of hint toward the climate in Northern and Western Europe, where integration models are often less strictly enforced and more multicultural. One of the film’s strengths is that it leaves room for interpretation: is this a testament to successful integration, or a problematic story about demands for total assimilation? ⭐ Rating: 7/10 (A politically charged portrait with a strong, intimate focus on Kafia, but with a subtext that is open to debate.) Production: 7/10 (a clear political stance behind Kafia’s journey) Cinematography: 6/10 Authenticity: 6/10 Fråga ChatGPT
