Review Summary

Pros: surreal, unforgettable visuals; haunting, dreamlike mood; bold allegorical sci-fi | Cons: thin character depth; slow or uneven pacing; limited, choppy animation

Will You Like This?

If you enjoy surreal, thought-provoking sci-fi animation with striking, sometimes disturbing imagery and a simple allegory, this could click—especially if you like Yellow Submarine or Paprika; Not for you if you want a straightforward, character-driven story.

This movie is an unmissable gem https://youtu.be/NBdRQo-OaGg

A little unknown gem of animation that needs to be watched. It's disconnected story and character relatability is a little lacking but the movie more than makes up for it by beautiful illustrations, interesting and creatively designed creatures and a catchy otherworldly soundtrack that is worth listening to outside of the film.

It is a science fiction movie very different from the others. It almost looks more like a Dalí or Bosco painting animated with psychedelic touches. In that style, to tell the truth, it shares a certain abstraction with Russian animation 'The glass harmonica' (1968). I can not say too much. I am not an expert in this style of movies.

In terms of style, this might be my favourite animated film ever. It's just so gorgeous. Add to that the over-the-top weirdness and creativity on display, and you have something truly special here.

me as an om: "oh no don't step on me kind draag hahaha :flushed: please no don't kill me hahaha "

Interesting animation, but I felt like the central allegory was a little dull and heavy-handed.

I needed a pick-me-up after being devastated by Killers (2014), so I decided to finally try this gem. I’m not a fan of Gandahar but I thoroughly enjoyed this. It sure packs a punch for only being 72m. The time jumps as chronicled by Terr give the film a quick but concise pacing. Terr seems to go from cute to resolute in the blink of an eye. Him running as a baby with his back straight has me dying 😂 The Draag’s secret is definitely surprising but the Om’s solution even more so. I ponder if Terr had never ran away from his owners, would another Om have come along and started the revolution? He is integral to the Om population whether they know it or not. The wild Oms could attack in large numbers all they want, but without Draag technology, it was always a losing battle. The animation and creature/plant design are what I was entranced in the most. My favorite creature is definitely the huge eyeballs War of the Worlds legs long dick thingy. I’m really impressed by the range in the score without anything sounding out of place.

This is a movie you will remember the beginning of and the surreal imagery. The second half (when the main character is no longer a pet) will leave you cold and I found it frustrating after such a strong start. The cruelty and unconditional love duality of children with their pets is the far more interesting story and literally is abandoned.

Fantastic Planet is a work I can respect immensely while also fully acknowledging that I truly get little to nothing out of it beyond a shiver down my spine and night terrors. This is true art; a perfect expression of a core theme and a love for the medium, with a strong core message and a good handling on how to portray it. Part of art is not everything is going to be for everyone, and this is one of those moments. It's worth a watch regardless.

Clearly an acid driven film of the early 70s, yet somehow even better than Yellow Submarine, for example. Is it the origin of the human race? An allegory of our coming destruction brought about by our failure to appreciate our environment? A Buddhist parable? A vegan morality? Take your pick. No matter how you interpret it, the story telling is magnificent. Don't forget to dose first :-)
