Amoral villainy to the extreme from von Stroheim, who really has a face made for silents. I wished there was a bit more of a narrative arc, as it just feels like it plods along from one con to the next until the end. I see there was a lot cut from the original edit of the movie, but I'm not sure how that could have helped matters. Still, this is a lot darker and nastier than you tend to see from Hollywood movies of this era, so it was worth watching.

Quite good but was expecting a little more having loved the director’s Greed (1924). It’s watchable enough but there are other silent films in the years preceding it, such as J’accuse, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Broken Blossoms etc that are better. I know the original cut of this was at least 2 hours longer than the 2h 23m version i saw but cant imagine that would make it better. If you are new to silent cinema, don’t start with this one: 6/10
