Imagine making a movie so distasteful to the original source that they made another movie just to prove to the audience that Godzilla can still be good.

The use of a cgi UFO for the majority of this film really brought this one down for me. Just because you can, doesn't mean you have to. There's nothing interesting about a shiny pebble flying over Japan.

"Godzilla 2000" had the thankless task of following up the fantastic "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" in Japan, but also the easy job of coming out after the dreadful US version. This reboot doesn't even come close to the former film, but the kick-off to the millennium era effortlessly leaves Roland Emmerich's Godzilla in the dust. The film does have a few thematic similarities with the Shลwa era, mainly because it is once again about aliens. But despite the rather light tone, it never becomes as ridiculous as the earlier films. However, the human characters left me rather cold, and Godzilla hardly appears at all in the middle of the movie. That's why I never really got fully into "Godzilla 2000," even though the movie is totally fine overall.

I'm a fan of the big lizard but that doesn't blind me to the fact that Godzilla movies as a whole are not very good "movies". The characters are unintentionally hilarious and the stories make no sense. But I don't care. I watch Godzilla movies for the spectacle of seeing a giant dinosaur raising hell with mankind. It's always over the top, always totally ridiculous, and almost always a lot of fun. I believe that "Godzilla 2000" was the first of the "Alternate Reality" series and the third re-firing of the monster's history. In this one, Godzilla looks meaner and doesn't dance around or wave his arms in the air or anything like the Godzilla of the late '60s and '70s. The rubber suit is a little more convincing than usual and the miniatures are still wonderful. The early CGI used here is truly awful, especially the alien spacecraft. I will say that the opening sequence when Godzilla makes his first appearances (lighthouse and tunnel scenes) are almost a little scary. This scariness is a rarity except of the original Japanese "Gojira" film which was a horror movie all the way.
