Goodbye Mother - Comments & Tips
A story told a thousand times about coming out, but that is interesting in the social context of a country like Vietnam. The film works like a comedy that has some funny moments, but is naïve in its concept of gay relationships. The main comic character is the grandmother, who suffers from senile dementia but is, consequently, the one who best accepts her grandson''s relationship. This vision of acceptance in the midst of a certain senile state describes with certainty the situation in a homophobic society. It is the character who lives in unreality (that is, outside social norms), who sees the homosexual feeling normally.
A beautiful story of coming home and the difficulties of coming out. I like that they didn''t shy away from the intimacy between the two boys. There is so much tenderness and charm to the film, so many things to love about it. The grandma was definitely the star of the film!
