Goodbye Uncle Tom - Comments & Tips

Abhorrent and nauseating, this documentary is extremely controversial due to its dramatized approach, full of explicit scenes that illustrate the narrated text. It is challenging to watch, and the controversy is justified when we consider that, according to the creators Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi, the film is intended to be anti-racist. However, the dramatized content based on historical facts proves to be degrading, humiliating and racist, made all the more disturbing by the tone of debauchery present in several scenes, which aims to shock the audience. It is difficult to express any thoughts on this documentary, as its dubious and shocking nature provokes deep revulsion and many ethical questions. However, if the intention was to provoke shock, nausea and a depressing feeling of hopelessness in the face of the atrocities that people are capable of committing, then this documentary has fulfilled its purpose for me. Every moment is truly bleak, brutal and disturbing.
