Overview

In 1980, Terry Fox continued his fight against bone cancer with the pursuit of a singular, motivating vision: to run across Canada. Three years after having his right leg amputated six inches above the knee after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma, Fox set out to cover more than a marathonโ€™s distance each day until he reached the shores of Victoria, British Columbia. Anonymous at the start of his journey, Fox steadily captured the heart of a nation with his Marathon of Hope. However the 21-year old BC native's goal was not fame, but to spread awareness and raise funds for cancer research. After 143 days and two-thirds of the way across Canada, with the eyes of a country watching, Foxโ€™s journey came to an abrupt end when newly discovered tumors took over his body

If you grew up in Canada in the 1980s, you know Terry Fox and his story. He ran the year before I was born, but despite that, I know the legend/myth just like most Canadians my age. But I didnโ€™t know the story this well, so this was still a new experience for me. Itโ€™s interesting to see how different something like this was before the internet. Itโ€™s incredible to me that people didnโ€™t know about this when he started, and itโ€™s also worth thinking about how nothing has really changed โ€“ people always want to use things for their own purposes, be it political gain, money, or other things. I guess because this is such a fundamental Canadian myth for those of us my age, that I was barely able to keep myself together while watching it. (A hangover might have helped with that.) I have no idea if itโ€™s this moving for non-Canadians, but seeing the full story is kind of overwhelming: Iโ€™m filled with pride, sadness, and a whole host of other emotions. The film itself is far from perfect. And that makes sense given Nash and his co-directorโ€™s lack of filmmaking experience. But despite some clunky moments โ€“ particularly in the early goings, when some of the montages and shots are really, really cliche and/or weak โ€“ the story is so powerful (at least to a Canadian) that you really donโ€™t care. PS Good job Quebec. Way to not fight cancer.
