This is a classic early Science Fiction film with a great performance by Charles Laughton (Dr. Moreau) and a crazed Bela Lugosi (Sayer of the Law). Dr. Moreau's got it all together until he breaks his own law, then it's trouble as his own animal-to-human creations hand him their final judgement in what is a truly goosebump-inducing scene. I love the way this looks. It's a Paramount film that reminds me of an original Universal horror. The fog, the mysterious island...it's really effectively creepy.

Image 2.75 / 5 and sound 2.75 / 5, quite good for the time. The aesthetic resembles that of King Kong in the 1930s. The best version of the island of Dr Moreu

Holds up really well. Just over an hour long so it's a simple version of the original story. Im OK with that. I think either get the book spot on, which has been tricky or just do this and make a decent horror. The doctor is well played. The last horror scene really works well.

We are Devo!

There's an island somewhere out there in the goddamn foggy laden deep blue sea. Here resides Dr. Moreau (Charles Laughton), he has a God complex and he is conducting experiments, turning animals into humans. Unsurprisingly and terrifyingly the results are not exactly a success!

There is something almost "Hitler-esque" about Charles Laughton's performance in this stunningly eerie adaptation of HG Wells' novel "The Island of Dr. Moreau". I have to admit to a certain bewilderment as to the name change - if anything, it rather detracts from the original - but hey, I'm nitpicki More
