Featured Comments/Tips

I don't usually comment (because anything I have to say has been said many times before by others), but I feel the need to comment here. -- The location is beautiful, the setting and concept sold me, and while I wasn't sure about Meghan Carrasquillo at the start, her character and performance very quickly grew on me. I was intrigued by the Firewatch profession, lifestyle and routine, how she spent her time, her background and reasons for being there, choosing that career path, etc. And believe me, the sci-fi/horror (even mystery) aspect had me excited, anticipating and expecting much more at that point. Unfortunately, that's exactly where the movie fell flat for me. A sudden freefall for that whole part of the movie. I _truly_ wanted to give this a much better rating for most of it (I'm not a critic, just some average, open-minded movie-lover) -- but, sadly, the last quarter of the movie just took a bad turn for the worst and left me feeling so disappointed....

A promising premise gets derailed by a comical, supernatural turn in the third act. This film is at its best when we're feeling the isolation of the ranger's day to day routine and peering out into the woods, hoping there's nothing out there peering back. The lead doesn't quite have the tools to carry what is essentially a one-hander for 40 minutes, but the cinematography of the forest is beautiful and sets the atmosphere well. Once the blue goo shows up, though, the Goosebumps-quality effects, laugh-out-loud bad acting, and nonsensical story beats tank the film. Skip it.

If I learned anything from this film, it's that people just randomly show up in the woods and people have 0 situational awareness.

Lookout (2025) feels like an underdeveloped attempt at storytelling. The plot lacks cohesion and fails to build any real connection with the viewer. Its overcomplicated themes don't add depth โ€” they just make the film harder to follow. There's no clear beginning or end, and while the protagonist is positioned as the central focus, her arc goes nowhere. Overall, a weak effort that doesnโ€™t deliver on any front.
