Pros: strong mother-driven stakes; eerie village rituals; some striking cultural moments | Cons: uneven pacing; predictable story beats; unconvincing effects

Will You Like This?

If you enjoy mythology-tinged folk horror with a protective-parent storyline and a slow build, this may work as a one-time watch, especially if you liked Betaal; Not for you if you want nonstop scares or polished creature effects.

CGI was so bad. Such a mediocre drama film which neither excels in horror nor in women related issues. The demon looked like a bad imitation of vecna from stranger things. Thankfully I watched it on netflix and not waste money in theatres. I couldnt finish this nonsense … left after the song in the second half

Filme muito bom eu recomendo

It irritates me so much when characters in Hindi movies based on Bengal start throwing Bangla words in otherwise Hindi sentences; that too with butchered accents. Either hire actors with good grasp of the language or don't make them speak Bangla words / sentences. Sounds so cringy. And did the writers forgot their own story midway, or what?
Joydev was supposed be a servant / puppet of the demon. But in the climax, he himself is the demon?? Don't tell me "he was puppet so long, that the demon fully took him over."
Waste of time. Bullshit drama, no logic, no suspense.

"Maa" (2025) struggles with a lack of originality and relies on a predictable, conventional storyline that feels outdated and uninspired. The screenplay is sluggish and disjointed, particularly in the first half, causing the narrative to drag without meaningful progression. Attempts at horror fall flat, offering few genuine scares and relying on illogical plot developments that weaken viewer engagement. The film leans heavily on melodrama and overused cinematic techniques, while technical elements such as editing and cinematography are mediocre. Supporting characters are underdeveloped, and the emotional core between the mother and daughter fails to leave a lasting impact.

First of all, that opening title card was Beautiful. The word “Maa” written in Hindi, simple but powerful, set the mood perfectly. For a few minutes I thought this was going to be something special. The first half builds good tension, especially around the rituals and atmosphere, but the moment the tree demon shows up, everything collapses. The CGI is laughably bad, and instead of horror I felt like I was watching a rejected superhero-fantasy villain. Honestly, if they had kept the demon in the shadows, it could’ve worked. Show less, scare more. Acting is mixed. Ronit Roy is outstanding, easily the best performer here. He plays menace with real weight, even though the visuals around him ruin half the effect. Kajol is fine, good in bursts, but never fully commanding. The rest of the cast drifts between okay and forgettable. Oh, and the forced Bengali accents on some actors felt odd. There are some interesting elements: motherhood, mythology, patriarchy. But they are buried under weak execution . Horror becomes fantasy, fantasy becomes superhero action, and by the climax it’s so over-the-top that it doesn’t even feel like the same movie anymore. Add confusing subplots (is girl pregnant? why Kajol was gonna kill her?), and it just turns messy. Music is a saving grace, Usha Uthup’s “Kali Shakti” slaps. The Kali Puja scenes and cultural visuals look gorgeous. But pacing drags, editing falters, and scares are basically absent. And compared to Shaitaan? Not even close. That film was sharp, scary, consistent. Maa feels like a confused cousin. Maa had ambition and Kajol’s star power, but ends up more of a fantasy-drama with clumsy CGI than the myth-horror it promised.
