Minamata - Comments & Tips
This is not an easy movie to watch ! It is not entertainment ! I literally had to look away in certain scenes as I could not face the things shown here. And I am usually not frail when it comes to things like this. But it sickened me to see how far some people are willing to go for profit and how they defend their actions with the '"greater good'" morale. I had never heard of Minamata before so movies like this are important to make you aware. Unfortunately they don''t change things as is proven by the text at the end. The world was in many regards already a shitty place in 1970, it still is today. And it probably will be 50 years from now.
The story behind the film is powerful and sad. Unfortunately, the film as a whole isnโt particularly strong,. Itโs certainly not awful but it could have benefited from a tighter, more compelling script.
Each true story based movies gets 8. I give 1 more for acting ='gt; 9 The story itself is very important and meaningful +1 I gave this movie 10/10 It is full of good acting. It is so dramatic you can taste the pain. Good movie. I liked it.
The tragedy caused by chemical contamination in Minamata is represented in a film that sometimes finds the right term between emotion and graphic document, but which the director leads towards conventional melodrama in the last part. Johnny Depp''s performance is remarkable in a restrained, psychological way, while Ryuichi Sakamoto''s excellent music builds a Requiem for the Victims that is overwhelming.
Not a bad movie, but nothing outstanding either. Good time waster with an entertaining enough story. 7/10
If only the succint performances and somber cinematography weren''t undermined by the casual approach Minamata takes in telling its story, it would have surely reached its full potential as a haeartbreaking story based on real life. Regardless Depp and Bages'' authenticity alone deserves praise.
