This is an excellent documentary about a woman, Judit Polgar, whom I never heard about, but who is by far the best female chess player to this day. The movie also gives a deep and interesting insight in to the world of professional chess. One takeaway of the movie to me is that, despite Polgar being the best female chess player ever, she mostly lost against Garry Kasparov, the best male player and many other male players. She was at best in the top ten of best players, though mostly even “only” in the top 30. I do not really get why, but it seems that the chauvinistic remarks by many players that women just do not have the mental and emotional capacities to match men in chess seem to hold some truth. The objective results seem to confirm that. Go figure why.

A pulse-pounding, punk-infused documentary that breathes new life into the _underdog sports_ trope. Rory Kennedy captures the grit of Judit Polgár’s career with such intensity that you’ll forget the outcome is history. It’s an empowering, albeit occasionally cursory, look at the woman who checkmated the chess world’s patriarchy. Essential viewing for anyone who found ==The Queen's Gambit== too tame. 👍
