Very solid Classic epic western, if a little predictable.

Epic filmmaking--I can't imagine the process of filming that many action shots of that many cattle. The story's been done before, of course--this is Mutiny on the Bounty Goes West--but it takes nothing away from the power of the characters and the scope of Hawks' vision. Montgomery Clift feels like he descended from outer space (in a good way) and contrasts beautifully with Wayne's stodgy (in a mostly good way) performance quality. The ending here disappoints (and I wish Cherry Valance played a bigger role as Matt's subtextual love interest), but this holds up as one of my very favorite Westerns.

Hawks takes us on a dirty, unrelenting cattle driv More

Tom Dunson is a self made cattle baron, he will do what ever it takes to protect the life he has made for himself. The constant fall in the value of livestock means that Tom, and his adopted son Matthew, must drive the gathered herd through the perilous Chisholm Trail, and th More
