A refinement and improvement on the formula Griffith created twenty years prior. This is maudlin, formulaic stuff but it works better for me than anything Griffith ever did, primarily because the direction doesn't pound you over the head with the melodrama. It's there, but overall there's less moralizing which makes for a different overall tone. The story becomes more specific, character-wise and a lot less biblical.

Another silent movie about a mistreated hooker. I seem to have seen quite a lot of these. A good movie though. Has a strong emotional core. The lead actress gives a very strong performance. While the visuals aren’t up there with the German or American silents of the 1920’s it is still an aesthetically pleasing film. Recommend you check it out of you have the chance. The score I watched it with (on youtube) was excellent. 7/10
