The real story here is a failed writer going full carnie to live out his fantasies and using jingoism and racism for his own success at the expense of the grieving and sensitive star athlete who made the sport what it is while daring not to be white, and the white competitor who benefitted from his rival taking a stand and never doing the same for him. The doc is best when this is in frame, but those touches are fleeting and not nearly as incisive as it should be. Kobayashi forever
