The Substance - Comments & Tips
This is probably the most fucked up film of the year, which was surprising to me, since it's kinda getting mainstream buzz. At it's core, it is a wonderful body horror story, incredibly gory, totally brave. The last 20 minutes are wild. Fantastic work by everyone involved.
"We're sorry you didn't appreciate your experience with the substance." 2/3 of this I really liked. Too bad I really, really hate body horror. Had to cover my eyes for most of the final act. Guy next to me couldn't stop laughing though. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Too bad I couldn't enjoy this more as it tackles some really interesting themes of addiction, beauty, youth, and celebrity. As someone who's worked customer service, this is the worst kind of customer—refuses to follow directions and then complains when things go wrong.
"Long aint it? The 7 days." If your stomach churns easily, we warned you. That 3rd act..was something else. Solid high concept film. Definitely like the substance angle. I hope they build this one out a bit. A lot of worldbuilding could be done with this. I think the cast did well all around. The prosthetics was dope, I can't see why this wouldn't at least be nominated, or at least special effects.
I was genuinely surprised the director/writer was a woman, she definitely has the male gaze mastered for sure for sure.
EDIT/UPDATE: I initially gave this a 7 but I forgot the whole dynamic about aging and if given the option of being a younger better version of yourself could be an addiction, and if I was put in a similar situation could I stop, or could I maintain the balance? Because of that I bumped it up. It got me thinking. Empathizing and shit.
What the hell is that ending? Such a nice movie and then they fked up the ending! Come on!
This was an amazing watch. It's like I just watched a two hour long Black Mirror episode.
As subtle as a sledgehammer in its messaging, laugh out loud silly in its execution, the title is a misnomer - there is very little of substance here.
Loved it. Great satire, very funny, utterly disgusting horror. Felt like an Aronofsky directed, Cronenberg produced/written body horror movie. Should get awards but probably won’t.
I don't know what to think of this, other than that I am not sleeping normally tonight
Was not expecting this 😂. Went in blind and was in awe. Starts off slow and picks up and when it does make sure you're not eating.
Good until the last 30 minutes then it got stupid and ridiculous
I was quite impressed that Margaret Qualley (and some of the extras) agreed to be hyper-sexualised in exactly the way that this movie criticises it.
Cronenberg meets Kubrick in a vivacious body horror. This movie is a wild, wild ride.
Dorian Gray meets Frankenstein with a huge dose of Cronenberg body horror. The long runtime absolutely flies by and both Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are incredible. For Demi Moore in particular it’s a hugely brave role and one that she will hopefully win awards for. Margaret Qualley has now cemented herself as true star who deserves to go huge after this. I can’t wait for the look my wife will give me once I’ve made her watch it!
How is this horror, this is a normal day for most woman nowadays.
