[CPH:DOX '23] A disturbing film about how technologies collaborate with the system of repression and surveillance to turn a country into a prison. After a survey in which 98% of the participants expressed their confidence in the Chinese government, the question posed by the film is what happens to the remaining 2%. Through three examples of dissidents being constantly watched, even in their own apartments, it's most disturbing when it deals with a pilot program that turned citizens into watchdogs for themselves, through a system of social credit, an assessment of the degree of good neighbor.
- Chinese people celebrating a fourth of July equivalent on the 100th year anniversary - A lawyer was taken for 10 days for "questioning". There were no specifics about why. Wish we knew, that would have been interesting. - We saw people enjoying themselves at a tech conference with foreboding music over - A couple are suspicious of a neighbour installing a surveillance device. They watched this installation on video on their own surveillance device. This was 20 minutes in. I gave up watching. I'm sure there are better documentaries out there.
