They were private investigators who couldn't figure out what was happening right under their noses and were bitter about Carl, who, despite being an jerk, did the right thing by reporting a crime, regardless of his motivations. The right thing to do, in my opinion, would have been to direct their anger at Cris, because he betrayed their trust and is a criminal. It seems in the documentary that if Carl hadn't reported Cris, they wouldn't have cared about his crime as long as their show aired.
