Insights

Review Summary

Pros: original folklore twist; suspenseful creature moments; dry humor | Cons: found-footage not for all; uneven pacing; some loose subplots

Will You Like This?

You’ll likely enjoy this if you want a fun, suspenseful mock-documentary creature hunt with Norwegian folklore and a bit of dry comedy; Not for you if you hate found-footage style or slow build-ups like in The Blair Witch Project.

usually cant stand found footage, but this one is full of amuse. hans is such a bitchin character.

One of the best found footage movies ever. I was worried about the comedic parts but this movie is actually hilarious at times. It''s a great mix.

A very well-done combination of found footage and Scandinavian folklore. Thanks to the shaky cameras, the serious tone throughout the film (including the descriptions at the beginning and end of the movie), and other elements, the film feels quite authentic. However, somewhere in the middle, the plot started to repeat itself, and as already mentioned, it lacked tension. Despite the weaker (but commendable for Norway) CGI and, in my opinion, a weak ending, it was a very enjoyable effort that I would definitely recommend as a quick, relaxing watch for a boring evening.

A troll hunter exposes a state secret to a bunch of wannabe reporters because he wants better pay for his night shifts. Amazing!!! I've turned this off 33 minutes in. Waste of time.

I love giant monster movies and "Troll Hunter" brings the big. A group of film students hookup with a rugged disgruntled troll hunter and come face to face with a variety of nasty angry trolls. There are several encounters with the beasts a couple of which are absolutely exciting. The premise of giant trolls existing without the public knowing about them is silly especially given their tremendous size but it doesn't matter it adds to the appeal of the movie. The history of trolls their habitat the different varieties of trolls it's all thrown into the mix. This makes the movie even more effective. It all sets up for a totally epic finale that redefines the word 'gigantic'.

Beautiful location and cool monsters but it''s painfully boring. Doesn''t work as a comedy or horror. The acting is plain bad. I liked the last minute though.

Blair Witch Project meets the norwegian folklore!

More like Cloverfield meets Norwegian folklore but i like this movie more.

Fantastic Movie! Original Language with Subtitle for the best Feeling!!!

another great '"found footage'" movie if you can pass( or don''t mind ) the language barrier. The Trolls are very effective, i was afraid it would look bad on screen but they did a good job with the special effects. Ps: off topic : Norwegian girls are god´s gift to men. seriously best looking girls in the world , even the '"random'" ones.

I found this movie to be quite entertaining and would like to watch it again sometime. It tells a fairly straightforward adventure story with good writing and fine acting, and even as they fill us in on the folklore of trolls, they don’t weigh us down with it. There is a delay before the total reveal of the creatures and it is worth the wait. I am not a self-proclaimed authority in special effects, but I thought they did a great job. Horror is included in the genre description, but it is not the sort of gory horror film I usually avoid. I see there is a new movie out on the subject, so it might be interesting to compare the two.

Just some quick thoughts...I saw this back before it was released theatrically in the US (iTunes had it as one of its ‘see-it-before-it-hits-theaters’ movies). It was good...the ending was somewhat anticlimactic, but the bulk of the film was solid, aided by a terrific performance from Otto Jespersen as a grizzled old troll hunter who works for the government and has been growing increasingly frustrated with their secrecy. The special effects also were incredible (here in 2012, when special effects have progressed so far, for me to mention the special effects in a truly film marks them as something special). A few storytelling quirks (mainly subplots that didn’t mean much or go anywhere) held it back a bit for me, but overall: very good, and worth the watch.

Interesting and decent movie getting the most of what it has at hand for a probably quite low budget.
