Insights

Review Summary

Pros: race-against-time urgency; strong cast performances; timely justice themes | Cons: uneven side plot; implausible leaps; humor often misfires

Will You Like This?

Youโ€™ll likely enjoy this if you want a straightforward, ticking-clock justice drama with strong performances and moral questions, in the vein of Blood Work or In the Line of Fire; Not for you if you dislike implausible coincidences or messy personal subplots.

Surprisingly straightforward, though 'True Crime' is still very good. The lead performance of Clint Eastwood is enjoyable and he is supported ably by Isaiah Washington. There are a number of recognisable faces behind those two, namely Denis Leary, Michael McKean, James Woods and Bernard Hill; Lucy Liu even has a minor role. I did think we were in for a biggest twist, but it kinda just goes the wall you - or, at least, I - expected. That's not actually a bad thing, as what is produced is entertaining and kept me interested throughout - it just feels like it is setting something different up at one or two points. I will say, if I had anything close to a negative it would be the humour - which sometimes works, but sometimes doesn't; no biggie, though.

Reminded me of Hitchcock''s The Wrong Man

The movie was a box-office flop, and I can see why. Though I do not think that it entirely deserves it. The main story is about a reporter who wants to save the life of a guy convicted to death, due to be executed that evening. This storyline is a bit oversimplified and frankly also too much exaggerated. Where many other people spent 6 years and fail to prove the innocence of the convicted, Clint does it in 6 hours. Well, a bit much but Clint and James Woods are excellent and help overlook some of those deficiencies. What is though the real problem with the movie is the second storyline. The Clint character is a womanizer who seem to always get caught. He also has a family, that is though way to young for him. He is 70, his wife looks 40 and his daughter is 6. Although it is his real-life daughter, it just looks all wrong in the movie and fir the character. This whole second storyline is ridiculous and unnecessary. It just does not fit into the movie. As I said, not terrible, but you have to overlook quite a bit in order to really enjoy it. Still, it is Clint.
