In 1944, the Russian military code established that a soldier who surrendered to the Germans would be considered a traitor. Between heroism and betrayal, the story of Devyataev reflects the contradictions of war. The film is shot with the technical efficiency of the Kazakh director Timur Bekmambetov, but loses efficiency due to a conventional narrative, despite being less patriotic than usual in Russian war cinema.
