A steamy, decades-long political romance set against historic backdrops; great for fans of "Mad Men" and "The Normal Heart."

Insights

Review Summary

Pros: sweeping queer-history backdrop; intense central romance; strong performances | Cons: explicit intimacy may shock; time jumps confusing; familiar historical beats

Will You Like This?

You’ll likely connect with this if you want an emotional, adult romance set against real historical pressure, with frank intimacy and shifting timelines, similar in spirit to Looking or Queer as Folk; Not for you if explicit scenes or heavy themes feel overwhelming.

Fellow Travelers is a piece that will not be recognized for its genius even in 2023. God knows that a hetero story of this caliber would have been a different case. I will riot if they don’t get those golden globes, because this is some of the best television I have ever seen. The innocence Bailey brings to young Tim is an absolute joy to watch. This character fit him like a glove, it was a fantastic jump from his role in Bridgerton to witness, and I’m sure this performance will do his career a lot of good. The juxtaposition Matt adds to the relationship between Tim and Hawk of a deeply tortured, cynical soul is fascinating to watch unfold, and I still believe this might be Matt Bomer’s best work. This story is beautiful and heart-wrenching, it doesn’t let you get sucked into a little gay fantasy, as much as you want to be, Marcus Hooks will make sure of that. Tim and Hawk will give you moments to breathe,
until they don’t.
A beautiful and heart felt movie. The gay representation was on point and it reflected how the times were before gay rights, which was tragic of course, nevertheless a good watch.

this made me suicidal in a good way

hot, gay, and incredibly moving

Matt Bomer and Jonathan Godamn Bailey do it again. This was a pleasure to be a part of honestly. I wish I could press reset on memory and get to experience all of it again.

I couldn't wait for this to be over. The two leads have very little chemistry. Loved the actress who plays Lucy Smith with sincerity, in this sea of bad drama acting. I couldn't wait for you know who to die.

One of the best and most epic love stories you will ever watch

I can't get over how amazing this show is. The acting, the story, the chemistry between them. All while bringing awareness to important topics such as HIV/AIDS and the Lavender Scare. I would highly recommend watching!

an excellent sprawling story interwoven with history, queer culture and hot men

5/10 maybe it’s me…. I got to episode 5 and dipped out…. I always say I’m not a prude, but I’m beginning to realise that I probably am! Well acted, historically accurate and a compelling storyline, so why only 5/10? It’s basically soft porn and it’s not needed and I’m not saying this because it’s a gay storyline I’d be the same if it was a heterosexual one, the scenes are there to titillate and probably shock people. For me there’s never a need for sex scenes in anything, kissing and falling on to the bed is fine, cut to the obligatory lighting of a cigarette at the end lol….. We just don’t need to see the so called act of sex and it’s this that put me off the show and switch off….. Also, not that it matters, but yes I’m a man that happens to be gay as well.

What a fantastic role for Jonathan Bailey following his success in Bridgerton to showcase his versatility. Like what is this, the
shy catholic nerdy schoolboy
vibe? Sold, instantly. The first 40 minutes of this series would be a
“I watch porn for the plot” meme
if it wasn’t for the fact that it’s also just actually a really good show. It's giving fanfiction, but it does serve a purpose, it is an
extension of the power (in)balance in their relationship in general; some of it healthy and fun, some of it not.
Some very impressive casting for this particular dynamic tbh; Matt is a very predictable pick for this role (in the best way), I've seen this vibe from him before, but Jonathan came out of nowhere, and they work so well together. I’m commenting this after the first three episodes, but this might be Matt Bomer's best work for me so far, and I say that knowing I rated The Normal Heart 10/10 a decade ago. But let’s not forget this isn’t just Hawk & Tim’s story. They are a catalyst, but Marcus Hooks is the character that tells the story. Jelani Alladin takes this project to another level. So excited to see the rest of this. Ps. I hope Jonathan Bailey knew he signed up for
Matt Bomer’s entire foot in his mouth.
