Overview

Hinako lives alone by the sea, quietly drifting through life after losing her family years ago. One day, a mermaid named Shiori saves her from a monster and says she’s come to eat her—just not yet. Until then, Shiori will stay by her side and keep her safe. In that moment, a deep hope swells in Hinako: Maybe this girl can finally grant her the ending she’s been waiting for.

Featured Comments/Tips

Depression: The Anime (Yuri version). The first episode nails the atmosphere right away, showing exactly what the MC is going through. The OP, the visuals, and especially the background music set such a heavy mood it almost gave me depression—in a good way. The FMC’s lifeless eyes alone say more than words ever could. If the rest of the season keeps this level of emotion, it might be one of the best anime this fall.

This Monster Wants to Eat Me has quietly add into the tiny list of my all-time favorite shows — and my favorite anime from this season. I didn’t expect it to hit me this deeply, but it did. It follows Hinako, a girl drowning in depression, and Shiori, a mermaid who quite literally eats humans. What unfolds between them isn’t just a romance, but a tragic, slow-burn love story where both are drawn to each other in a way that feels beautiful and destructive at the same time. The art style perfectly mirrors the sadness and emptiness the characters carry. Nothing feels exaggerated or fake — Hinako and Shiori feel painfully real, the kind of characters that stay with you long after the episode ends. This was the kind of story that always felt like it was meant to exist, and by the end, it genuinely felt like something special. I really hope it gets a second season, because there’s so much more to explore here. That said, this is not an easy watch. The series touches on heavy themes, including idolizing suicide, thoughts about it, suicide attempts, It doesn’t shy away from discomfort, and viewers should be aware of that going in. A haunting, emotional experience — and one I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.
