Will You Like This?

Youโ€™ll likely enjoy this if you like messy, very-online LA friendship comedies with sharp jokes and uncomfortable moments, similar to Life & Beth or Palm Royale; Not for you if you need lovable leads and steady, grounded storytelling.

did not finish. admittedly got all the way up to the finale (we are in a josh hutcherson renaissance and he looks very good in this show) but i just couldnโ€™t take it anymore. almost all of the characters are insufferable, thereโ€™s no one to root for. i really did want to like it!! it had one funny episode! it has a gorgeous and talented cast, but it just fell so flat.

This was a comedy? Go figure... :thumbsdown_tone2: :thumbsdown_tone2:

Has no one noticed that it's a gen z version of The Entourage? Except it's an influencer instead of an actor...currently on episode 3 and that is stuck in my head. Both are slightly plotless and show a very superficial LA lifestyle. Don't love it, kind of dislike it but not yet in the hate category.

HBO has been stuck in a prestige loop, making essentially the same show since 2012; muted tone, awkward realism, and characters who arenโ€™t self-aware enough to lean into either humor or emotion. Everything has to be a dramedy and socially observant rather than genuinely funny or emotionally indulgent and as a result, their shows exist in an in-between space, not silly enough to be truly comical, yet too intellectual to be soupy. That style was once great, I loved it in Girls, but itโ€™s been repeated to exhaustion in Mrs. Fletcher, Crashing, Insecure, and many others. And now thisโ€ฆ

I'm a fan of Rachel Sennott, so I was excited to see her TV show. Unfortunately, I don't think this show works. It does have some funny moments that made me laugh, but the whole show revolves around a cast of characters that have almost no redeeming qualities. I get that is the point of the show, but for me to care about the random plot and character developments or moral quandaries, I need to care about the characters. It's an unreasonable expectation to create these career or relationship struggles for Rachel's character and then expect me to be on her side when the rest of the show is so geared at making me dislike these characters. Rachel plays the same type of character from prior roles in Bottoms and Bodies Bodies Bodies. She's excellent at that fake airhead cadence. The rest of the cast varies. I think Josh Hutcherson as her boyfriend was the only one that was meant to be likeable, though I did actually like Charlie and felt he was the only character who had an arc I could appreciate and had a good balance between the toxic and pleasant characteristics. There's a character named Alani. She sort of just exists. She has no real role in the show, no arc, and no real comedic moments. Mostly pointless. Then there is Odessa A'zion's Tallulah. I think the show does want us to care for her, but I don't think she really earns it. The actress is having a moment due to Marty Supreme, and she does a decent job acting here. However, I feel like everything is overshadowed by the fact that she's just constantly in absurdly skimpy outfits. So yeah, the biggest flaw of this show is the characters. I actually think the comedy is alright, actually pretty good at times. Plot can only work if the characters work, but I also need to mention that this show has some really random things happen. There are random moments of absurdity that I can't really talk about because they are spoilers, but it just took me out because it felt like it was from a different show. Anyways, I wish Rachel balanced the characters out more and gave us a reason to root for them. Since she doesn't, it's hard to really care that much about the show as a whole.
