Overview
The naรฏve Maris joins the Wehrmacht during the Nazi occupation of the Baltic states, together with his brother and several others from the village. The barracks are in a monastery, and Maris โ whom everyone views as a fool โ seems to consider his fate a religious calling. Until his eyes are opened by the soldiersโ misbehaviour, and he takes it upon himself to save a young woman.

[IFFR'22] The director's proposal in her vision of the holocaust through poetic images is risky, perhaps too sinuous, and sometimes recalls the work of her compatriot Alexander Sokurov, but her intention to go deeper through visual representation in the psychology of the characters is not always successful. She reflects on guilt and the inability to be innocent in a violent environment, with a film that is beautifully sad and poetically somber, but narratively uneven.
