Although the short film “Dovecote” impresses with great cinematography, a decent score, and solid performances, it still didn't work for me. This is mainly due to the fact that it seems extremely pretentious. There is no dialog because the oh-so-intense emotions, black-and-white shots, and the women's prison setting (including nuns) must be enough—but they are not. In the end, even lead Zoë Saldaña, whose husband directed the movie, can't save it for me. I just didn't care about anything the entire time.

The interesting part is that it is shown as an almost one sequence shot. The cinematography is beautiful. But the story seems a bit plain to me.

“Dovecote” dives deep into the emotional complexities of freedom, redemption, and dignity within a setting of oppression. Marco Perego delivers a powerful and contemplative work set in a women’s prison in Venice, where the protagonist, played by Zoë Saldana, faces the pivotal moment of her release. The story is crafted with breathtaking subtlety, inviting the audience to reflect on the trade-offs and emotional weight tied to what we call “freedom.” Every scene carries a mix of melancholy and beauty, perfectly capturing the tension between the desire for a fresh start and the fear of the unknown. Perego’s direction stands out for treating the characters with profound respect and humanity. The camera becomes an almost silent observer, documenting the interactions and daily lives of the incarcerated women without resorting to stereotypes or passing judgment. Close-up shots and smooth camera movements give the narrative an intimate tone, drawing the audience into the protagonist’s internal struggles. The soundtrack perfectly complements this immersion, shifting between moments of quiet and intensity that mirror Saldana’s emotional whirlwind. Together, the visuals and sound create a harmonious dance that lends the film a rare emotional depth. Zoë Saldana delivers a masterful performance, conveying her character’s inner turmoil through subtle gestures and glances. Her farewell to her cellmates is layered with sadness, gratitude, and the uncertainty of someone about to face a world that feels more like punishment than reward. In the final scene, as she sits on a bench, contemplating a choice, her character becomes a living metaphor for the decisions we all confront in our search for meaning and purpose. “Dovecote” transcends the confines of the prison, becoming a universal reflection on what it truly means to be free, offering a cinematic experience that is as impactful as it is unforgettable.
