Overview
In 1987 Oakland, a mysterious force nudges a handful of underdogs into four loosely connected stories. Across punk clashes, hip-hop ambition, a criminal looking for a way out, and a sports star seeking payback, the night builds into a loud, nostalgic, and often over-the-top ride.
Insights
Review Summary
Pros: high-energy anthology chapters; nostalgic 80s vibe; fun performances | Cons: uneven segments; thin character depth; messy overall cohesion
Will You Like This?
You’ll likely enjoy this if you want a fast, chaotic, 80s-throwback anthology with pulpy action and big swings; Not for you if you need tight storytelling or deep characters, like in Run All Night or The Beekeeper.

this movie very over rated
any movie where nazis are wiped out deserves an extra star.
I didn't really know what to expect. And even after watching, I'm not sure how to describe it. An anthology of four tightly coupled stories, set in the 1980's, not with any specific new things (you can see Quentin Tarantino movies, Stephen Kings Maximum Overdrive, 80's revenge flicks, multiple dance movies etc all represented) but combined in a unique way. I say relax, give it a true, but only if you are ok with lots of violence
Very Disappointing. I was expecting this to be a snapshot of something like the TV series Heroes or George R. R. Martin's book series Wild Cards. There was plenty of build-up that just ends up being a single individual doing superior things, but nothing super-human. The 4 stories all tie-in nicely together, but I wanted and expected more. Definitely not the worst movie I've ever seen, but it is not something I would watch again.
The sum of the parts sometimes exceeds the whole. This film might normally reside in the mid-6s, however, I've bumped it to a 7. 6 is still good, although I can see people possibly going with a high 5 (but nothing lower). This film came out of nowhere for me. It features 4 interconnected stories... and a number of memorable characters. However, like many anthologies or collections of short stories, none of the four episodes really feels complete... especially the third (and best). However, they all have highlights and are all worth watching... and the way the stories overlap is nice. The director appears to be following up this film with another movie presenting a series of interlocking stories. Based on this, I look forward to it. This film is worth a shot. Stick with it. There are some good performances, it's original (if not filled with homages) and quirky - with style to boot. Oh, and if you don't fall in love with the character of Tina, you may not be human.
excellent, if you were a teenager in the 80s this has more easter eggs and references than anything i've ever seen.
This was odd. Admittedly didn't end up finishing it. The art style, creative choices, and the like made it too odd for me.
Nothing like Nazi slaughter to get the blood pumping.
I went off the visual as inspiration to watch this movie. Didn’t read a dang thing and didn’t put on the trailer. I just saw 80s, bright lights, and Pablo Pascal. Within seconds I knew this movie was going to be a sci fi horror movie. Silly me. So full disclosure, as always. I’m super sick and have difficulty focusing. So this movie, as freakin odd as is it, was probably the best choice for me. It was 4 short stories that connected. I guess kinda like Crash but not? I like the 80s part of it. I liked the music. I thought the acting was cool. I especially loved being reminded that there was a world in which Nazis are considered bad. I liked it enough. My husband said “that’s somethin’” and declined to comment any further. Did I like it bc the story lines are short? Perhaps. But I sure didn’t like it enough to try it again when I feel better.
I could have watched an hour and half of just the Pedro storyline. The rest of it was sub-par, but it was fine.

An anthology style film, set over a few chapters, that tie together all the characters. There wasn't too much in character development but it felt like it wasn't really needed since it's broken down into chapters. The premise of each chapter is what amounted to the fun this film is. It's a little over the top but that's what contributeds to the charm of this film. I truly appreciate the use of 924 Gilman as a set because, well, i was in my late teens during the year this film takes place and I made many treks from Tahoe area to the Gilman to see shows there, practically from the get go. I feel this film scores well with me because it's the era i came of age.

While its narrative lacks cohesion and more substantial development of its themes and characters, it more than makes up for it with its frenetic pace, distinctive visuals, and pure entertainment value that keeps viewers engaged from start to finish. With charismatic performances, an electrifying soundtrack, and an utterly chaotic finale, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck present a film that, while not for everyone, will undoubtedly find its audience among genre cinema and nostalgia fans."
