Insights

Review Summary

Pros: spooky, creepy mood; quick jump scares; fun group watch | Cons: predictable story beats; uneven acting; slow to start

Will You Like This?

If you want a light, PG-13 supernatural scare ride with familiar jump moments, this may work, especially if you enjoy Poltergeist or The Possession; Not for you if you need truly intense, original horror.

just watch this and all i got to say is shitty movie...don''t waste your time.

Thought this was going to be a good supernatural movie. OMG was it ever TERRIBLE!!! Nothing scary at all... what a waste of time.

The acting is bad. Painful to watch.

clumsy writing, bad acting, boring horror non scary moments and all the obvious cliches ... the worst horror film from the US this year.

The Lego movie was scarier than this one.

it wasn''t as scary as i expected, but still really good

Nothing special... could work as a Hasbro TV commercial ;)

I do not know how a movie can be this utter dog shit.

There is maybe a reason why the words โ€œboardโ€ and โ€œboredโ€ sound almost the same. In any case, no movie has bored me as much as โ€œOuijaโ€ for a long time. A movie version of the spirit board was completely unnecessary either way, but everything here really is the lamest possible version. There are no scares, no surprises, and some good actors deliver below-average performances. The second movie is supposedly better, but to be honest, that wouldn't be all that much of an achievement.

Mildly creepy, Hasbroโ€™s latest board game film, _Ouija_, is more monotonous than scary. After her best friend commits suicide Laine Morris uses a Ouija board to attempt to contact her on the other side, but instead of her friend Laine reaches a tortured spirit thatโ€™s seeking help. While Olivia Cooke gives a fairly decent performance, the rest of the cast is rather bland. And the plot is a pretty stereotypical ghost story with all of the usual tropes. Yet the production values are quite good, and set a chilling and atmospheric tone. _Ouija_ isnโ€™t so much a bad film as itโ€™s a clichรฉd and uninspired one.

You can't expect much from a movie about a bunch of teenagers fooling around with a haunted board...so you shouldn't be disappointed with this fun little scary movie. It's not "horror" (there's nothing really horrific about it) but it make for a good spooky/creepy feel. Bunch of teenagers get together and play with a Ouija board and get pretty much what everyone expects to see when you "play with a Ouija board". (I don't know about today's generation but back in my childhood/teen years, everyone had this fascination/fear of playing with a Ouija board and seeing what - if anything - would actually happen. Kind of like staring into a mirror at midnight and repeating _"Bloody Mary"_ three times. We all dared each other but no one would ever do it.) No, this wasn't a "great" movie by any stretch, and the acting was pretty sub-par, of course, but again...this is what everyone EXPECTS to happen when you play with a Ouija board, so Hasbro - and the rest of the producers - capitalized on that paranoia and came away with a fun, creepy 90-minute film. Don't watch this expecting a "horror" film; watch it expecting some great "creepy feeling moment" suspense and you'll probably enjoy it. I found it enjoyable, even if predictably lame.

Boo! Jump! Horror is one of those genres that creates such voting and reviewing hostility on internet sites. You can guarantee that no matter what new horror film comes out it will garner posts on the likes of IMDb as being "the worst horror film I have ever seen". That is until the next big release, where we will go around the houses again... Ouija is just a standard boo-jump horror picture with a standard story line. Any expectation of any thing more would have (will do) led (lead) to great disappointment. It's one of those horror films that asks you to turn off the lights and just enjoy the quick spooky ride, then you get off the ride and quickly move on to something else. It's neither "the worst horror film of all time" or anything remotely original. It's Boo-Jump horror 101, so buy into that or leave it well alone. 6/10
