In comparison to the Japanese sequels to "Ringu", the prequel "Ring 0: Birthday" does a few things right. Above all, the film is competently directed throughout and benefits from solid performances. However, it's a shame that it's boring as hell. Horror is really almost non-existent here. And I seriously doubt anyone cared about the backstory of this creepy girl from the well. Besides, it was already sufficiently explained in the first film. A bit of mystery should have been left open. To top it all off, the explanation here contradicts numerous elements from the predecessors. Thus, "Ring 0" also fails completely as a prequel. However, it is at least not the worst film of the series.
