Insights

Review Summary

Pros: strong cast presence; brisk globe-hopping; gritty underworld details | Cons: messy plotting; thin character work; uneven pacing

Will You Like This?

You’ll likely enjoy this if you want a straightforward cartel thriller that tracks the drug supply chain with a tough, sometimes brutal tone; Not for you if you need tight plotting, deep characters, or a consistently serious vibe like Skin Trade.

I have watched a lot worse movies of Cage lately but this is not one of them. I can not say I enjoyed it but not bad at all for time killing.

This can't be a real movie. I've seen some bad movies, but this is exceptionally bad.

The plot of the movie was all over the place. I had no idea what was going on half the time or why. The characters seemed to just appear doing things because the script told them to. I kept asking myself what just happened. It had no rhythm or structure, and the pace was a mess. There was this guy who appears at the start of the movie with his family who had quite a bit of screen time to just disappear and was never seen again. I don't know why he was even included in the film. He served no purpose. The DEA agent plot was slow and a waste of time. Nicolas Cage wasn't good but wasn't terrible. Laurence Fishburne was not very good in this. His character was written so poorly. He had this really silly scene with these two prostitutes and then an even worse scene at this strip club. I could not take him seriously. The other characters don't warrant my time to speak on. The ending was trash and so was this film. 3/10

I''ve got more talent in my whole body than Nic Cage has in his little finger (or whatever). This cut and dry thriller isn''t worth the tiny effort required to watch it.

Okay movie. Drags on a bit. The ending surprised me.

In the words of my wife who finds something good in every shitty movie: '"This was a waste of valuable life time - maybe the worst movie made in the last century'". I have already forgotten it. Which movie am I reviewing?

Cage has starred in some dire movies in recent years, which is a shame, as he is a very capable actor. I expected this to be one of his better films, partly because of the acting talent he is surrounded with. Sadly, everybody is wasted, as this is a messy, unfocussed essay on drugs that has nothing new or interesting to say. Sorry to say it, but this really is garbage!

Wow, I guess Laurence Fishburne went bankrupt.

This was an interesting film with a lot of promise. But after 30 mins you''re still not really sure what''s happening. Slow and boring, not worth watching.

I enjoyed this from start to finish. A well-executed idea to trace from start to finish the life cycle of the drugs. Cage and Fishbourne were both on point doing what they do at this stage of their careers. I liked that the direction was capable and not flashy with some neat editing to spice it up when worthy. My only complaint was some of the score brought me out of the scenes - a bit thumpy during the desert scene particularly. Another recommendation from The Dana Buckler Show that has not disappointed in the slightest. A very efficient and informative film. 7.25/10

Surely, by 2019, Nicolas Cage had sorted out his issues with the IRS?? Otherwise, what on earth possessed him and an equally out-of-sorts Laurence Fishburne to take part in this third rate crime drama. The pair are despatched by their bioss to investigate just what is happening to their disrupted supplies of cocaine. Now it's quite a trail they have to follow stretching from Mexico all the way through the United States to the ultimate destination in Canada. Along the way they discover that not only is their lucrative business being tampered with, but the drugs themselves are being thinned out using dangerous additives that are causing some of their clients to die the grimmest of deaths - not at all good for business! Now, mercifully, there is little dialogue to complain of here - it's all in the imagery and the imagination and there is fails pretty spectacularly. It is flat, dry and although only just over the hour and a half in length, seems to take for ever to reach a predictable and unimaginative denouement. I suppose what is interesting is watching the price rise exponentially as the production chain becomes a distribution one and every pair of hands has to take their cut, but for the most part this is a really disappointing watch that is nobody's finest work - on either side of the camera. Authentic and brutal at times? A little - but it's search for a more family-orientated rating means it's all just a bit lacklustre. I really wouldn't bother.

The Cook (Nicolas Cage) is sent by the leader of a drug cartel , The Boss (Barry Pepper) to find out who has been messing with his shipments of cocaine. The plot of the movie was all over the place.
